The University of Latvia (LU) is the largest university in the Baltic States. In thirteen faculties are studying more than 22000 students. Scientific research is conducted in over 50 branches of science, which present the four main blocks of science: the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and education sciences. The University of Latvia has been always active in international collaboration:

- bilateral cooperation agreements (with 66 universities in 27 countries); 
- membership in the international university organizations and networks;
- participation in international educational and research programs and projects.

The Faculty of Chemistry is a centre for academic and professional education in chemistry. There are approximately 300 students in the faculty. It offers both Bachelor’s and Master’s study programmes. In addition, professional higher education study programmes, such as Protection and Expertise of Labour Environment and Education of Chemistry Teachers give an opportunity to get professional higher education. Doctoral studies are the way to pursue a doctorate in chemistry. Moreover, students have many possibilities to take part in research work.

 

Dr. Dace Namsone has a PhD from University of Latvia on education and masters degree on chemistry. She is  working to improve the quality of teaching and learning in Science and Mathematics in secondary education as a head of Curriculum Development and in-Service teacher training reform projects  implemented by State Education Center in Latvia till now. Her previous working experience - advisor for curriculum development  in the Centre for Curriculum Development and Examinations,  a teacher trainer, chemistry advisor and chemistry teacher.  She is the author of the set  of textbook and  teaching materials “Organic Chemistry for Secondary Schools” ; publications  about improvement of Science Education, Science teaching and learning in classroom and teacher training etc.

 

Dr. Jaseps Login is docent in the Department of Chemistry. He teaches organic chemistry and information technologies. His research interests revolve around the improvements of science education at secondary and tertiary levels. From 2006 till now he is working as an expert in Curriculum Development and in-Service teacher training reform projects  in Science and Mathematics education in Latvia. For more than ten years he has been a director of the Youth Centree “Riga Nature School” organising different programmes in science education related to: school students research, practical classes for young researchers in chemistry, physics, biology and geography in cooperation with the University of Latvia, natural history museum of Latvia, the Botanical Garden, Zoo, etc. He is responsible for the chemistry and integrated science sections in the newly established four years professional bachelor programme in education – Bachelor of science + two science teacher specialties.

 

Ilze Gaile is currently working as chemistry expert and teacher trainer in the area of science teachers professional development in Curriculum Development and in-Service teacher training reform projects  in Science and Mathematics education in Latvia. She had worked as a chemistry teacher for 18 years , while also fulfilling the roll of a vice headmaster.  Tukum’s  district Chemistry teacher’s  association has been leaded by her.
