The Dokuz Eylül University (DEU) was founded on 20 July 1982. Presently DEU has 10 faculties, 5 schools, 5 vocational schools, 5 graduate schools and 5 institutes. Dokuz Eylul University provides research-oriented, creative and student-based education, which does not dictate knowledge, but teaches ways to reach information, gives importance to team work and tries to keep student-staff interaction at high levels. The philosophy and method of problem based learning is implemented extensively in the University. Students at the Dokuz Eylul University are intellectual individuals with developed communication skills, who use their mind, don’t hesitate to ask questions, dream and think, and are hardworking, productive and creative, sensitive to social problems, respectful to their essential values. Dokuz Eylul University’s Mission is in terms of Society: A powerful society composed of individuals who protect secularist and social state devoted to rule of law and is conscious of its values in the light of rationality and science and can use these values for production, has very strong and active university-industry-society interaction. Prof.Dr.Teoman Kesercioglu is a professor of science education. Head of Dept. of Elementary Education in Dokuz Eylul University. His main research interests are scientific literacy, curriculum development and implementation, scientific inquiry, scientific argumentation, and history, philosophy and nature of science. Besides his educational studies, he is also working on systematic botany. He is an executive committee member of IOSTE.

Prof.Dr.Gul Guner is director of graduate school of health sciences in DEU since 2000. This school is responsible for the coordination of MSc and Ph.D degrees in the fields of basic medical sciences and multidisciplinary fields. She has worked on the Biochemistry Education committee of Federation of European Biochemical Society since 2001; and in 2009 she has been elected as Chair of the committee on Education. She has been coordinating a graduate-school course on “Planning, Appliying and Evaluating Experimental Research” to students from the different disciplines since eight years. Prof. Dr. Gül Güner Akdoğan has been representing TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) for the coordination of research-project competitions for both elementary and secondary education level students, involving not only the city of Izmir but also the whole Aegean region. In this framework, she has constant dialogue with science teachers. Funded by TUBİTAK, she organizes in-service training courses on scientific research methodologies to teachers from this region.

Dr. Bulent Cavas completed his undergraduate studies in the field of science education at
Dokuz Eylul University, Faculty of Education, Science Teacher Training Programme in 1998. Dr. Cavas holds Master’s and PhD degrees in science education at the same University. During his graduate studies he worked as a research assistant at the Department of science education. He has joined 6 international, 5 European and 7 National Projects. He has over 60 national and international publication and written 5 books with department members. He has attended many international symposium, congresses and workshops in different countries. Currently, His research interests are Inquiry based science education, ICT in Science Education, International Comparative Projects on science education, the use of science labs. He is an executive committee member of IOSTE (International organization for science and technology education). Currently, Dr. Cavas is working with staff members of Tartu University on the "Modelling Teacher Needs for Competence and Confidence in conducting Inquiry Based Science Activities" as post-doctoral studies using Estonian Science Foundation Fellowship programme.

Dr. Banu Köz is a lecturer, holds bachelor & master degree in chemistry and Ph.D degree in chemistry (from Ege University). She has designed and conducted research on chemistry. Her main research interests are inquiry based science (chemistry) education, nature of science, polymerisation and synthesis of organic compounds.
