The Education team within the School of Health, Community and Education have been recognised for the high-quality of their work as one of only four Category A University providers of both secondary and primary Initial Teacher Education, as classified by the Training Development Agency from Ofsted inspections. The Education team also deliver a portfolio of Post Compulsory Teaching Programmes (PCET) that maintain high-quality inspection outcomes and in the first year of the new national reforms have gained full endorsement from Standards Verification UK.
Prof. Susan Rodrigues is a Professor in Education at Northumbria University, School of Health, Community and Education, Studies. She has international experience in school teaching, graduate teaching and postgraduate supervision in the area of science education and in the area of e-learning in science education. She is an experienced initial teacher educator having worked within initial teacher education programmes in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. Her main teaching domains in higher education: science education, chemistry, the use of information communication technology, access issues and learning theories. Her research focus is in the area of e-learning in science education, teacher professional development and science curriculum development. Susan Rodrigues was a member of the IOSTE Executive Committee and reported at IOSTE 2004 on challenges and issues faced by western European nations. Her ESRC Knowledge Transfer Grant funded project on Vodcasts in Science Education has received a great deal of interest. Her work is making a contribution both to innovative practice and to theory. She has edited a book on the notion of digital literacy, drawing on chapters written by colleagues across the globe. Her current research in the area of ICT focuses on the use of various computer games to teach and learn mathematics.
